How to overcome stressful situations?
Stressful situations can come in numerous forms, colors and textures. But for now i am going to take a situation where one has to join a new office or a student has to switch schools or a person changing department of work or such similar cases where a person is entering into something or somewhere new.
I am willing to share a short but rather relevant incident that i faced and how i stayed calm in the situation.
When i joined college i had to stay in the college hostel in a different state with people speaking various languages and as everyone is aware of, it is pretty stressful. My family said their goodbyes before they left me with my journey. I remember it was 10 pm when i was pulled back from the main entrance door while the guard locked it behind my family. The hostel was so dark and quiet it almost made me feel like i'm standing on an old barren station. Well, my warden asked three seniors to make sleep in their room as it was too late at night and it was my first night alone and i forgot to mention why it was so quiet, because it was vacation for many departments so people had not come back yet and my room was allotted on the first floor and practically not even one room was occupied.
1) Distract yourself from the issues that worry you. Fixing yourself on another scenario going on in front of you would help.
Ok, so that was the description above how things looked around me.I was invited in the room by my seniors, they seemed nice. They spoke to me for a while and then asked me to take some rest as i had classes the next day. Usually, people would get paranoid in these situations when you are asked to spend your first night with your seniors and where more than half of the hostel is empty but i found a way to stay calm and not freak out.
I figured i was not going to find any sleep that night being in a new place so i simply pretended that i was sleeping and ill tell you why i did that but i do not recommend someone to do this in all cases, my situation needed me doing it, so act accordingly for example if you have a presentation to give not sleeping wont help you.I had to be sure that they were not going to do something stupid as we all hear stories, next i had to keep my belongings safe and i wanted to gain some insight on how the environment was in the hostel.
So i kept quite and pretended to sleep and its very difficult to stay calm when you have to act, so what i did was i kept listening to whatever they spoke about, their stories and whatever they had to share with each other because if i would have not done that, i would have freaked out by constantly thinking about things like i'm in a new place, i'm not going to stay with my parents anymore, how will my class go and etc. These thoughts eat you up in that moment.
2) Fixing yourself on a song or two with you attempting vocals and music in your mind will keep your brain relaxed and eased.
And after staying all night distracted i managed to stay focused and calm. And in the morning i had to fight the anxiety of getting a ride and going to college in a totally strange place, so the day before i was listening to some songs and i picked one of my favorites which would run in my head on a loop and that helped me getting a ride(i didn't speak the local language)and travelling and not thinking how the day would go and figuring the way to my department.
3) Start a conversation with someone next to you. This helps you to stay on the topic why are you there and also gain some extra knowledge.
When i reached college i was the first person standing in my department and now the songs were helping less and less. And now i had to find some other way to stay relaxed and calm.Meeting new people was not my forte because till that day my dad would introduce me to new people, i never liked doing the whole introduction part but he was not there that day and as you remember i had to keep my self busy to stay all okay.
Finally one person arrived and she stood beside me waiting for the class to open.I waited for few minutes and i understood she was not the person who would break the ice, so i finally did and it was an achievement for me.I just kept talking to her which helped me not to focus on trying to find who all are my classmates amidst the people walking towards us or from missing my parents and my brother and so much more.
4) Install a new game, you will spend time understanding the game and not spoiling your day with tension and stress.
5) Watch some funny videos from time to time, humor does helps a lot as it releases hormones that keep you calm and optimistic.
I hope this helps you in one way or another.
